Connecting
your new Hayward
Filter System to your pool is a simple
process.

1. Remove the parts from the
box and familiarize yourself with each.
Your filter system includes a Hayward Power Flo pump, Hayward Sand
Filter tank, Filter valve, filter and pump mounting base, plus all the hoses,
connectors and clamps necessary for installing your new system.
2. Snap the filter tank
into the base. Make sure that the drain
cap at the bottom of the tank has the gasket inserted and is hand tight. Do not over-tighten the drain cap. You can strip the tank threads.
3. Using the bolts provided,
attach the pump to the base.
4. The lateral assembly
provided with your new system consists of a standpipe attached to a hub with
eight laterals. Insert the assembly and
fold the laterals down. The laterals
should all be in the “down” position, away from the pipe at a 90° angle before adding the sand.
Make sure that the stand-pipe is
straight and the lateral assembly is properly seated.
5. Cover the top of the pipe
with the provided protective cover.
6. Fill the filter tank
with water to just above the lateral assembly.
7. While holding the
stand-pipe steady, slowly pour the new sand into the filter tank.
8. After filling with the
proper amount of sand, remove the covering from the top of the pipe.
9. Place the large o-ring on
the bottom of the valve. This o-ring
seals the valve to the filter tank.
Place the valve onto the filter tank. Make sure the o-ring on the
bottom of the valve remains in place.
If this o-ring slips down, it can become pinched and allow a leak. Secure the valve to the tank with the flange
clamp.
10. Thread the hose connectors into the pump and filter valve (use
Teflon tape to seal each) hand tight.
Gently tighten each with a wrench.
These fittings should not be over-tightened. Over-tightening fitting into the filter valve or pump can break
the plastic and this is not covered by the warranty.
11. The hose connectors
should be installed per the following:
one straight connector into the strainer basket on the front of the
pump. A gray barbed fitting into the
top of the pump. A 90° elbow fitting into the “pump” port on the filter valve. (this is
the top port on the side with two ports).
A straight fitting attaches to the bottom “return” port. If you look carefully at the side of the
valve ports you will see that they are marked “pump” and “return”. Hayward provides no fitting or hose for the
“waste” port on the opposite side of the filter. You may purchase a fitting and backwash hose from Barbi-Lin Pools
or you may plumb this waste port with PVC pipe into a drain.
12. Attach one of the ribbed
flexible hoses from the pool skimmer to the front of the pump. Attach the clear hose from the top of the pump into the top port of
the filter valve marked “pump”. Attach
the other ribbed flexible hose from the filter valve port marked “return” to the
return jet (eyeball) on the pool. All
of these hoses should be clamped using the stainless steel clamps provided.
13. After the pool is full
of water, make sure that the pump strainer basket is full of water. If it is not, push down and hold the handle
on top of the filter valve. This will
allow air to pass through and the pump strainer should fill with water.
14. Backwash the filter 3
to 5 minutes (or until the water in the sight-glass runs clear). This removes
any small particles that may be found naturally in the filter sand.
15. The filter is now ready for standard operation.
