Pool Cleaning & Filtration

Even the best chemical maintenance will not keep your pool water clean without an efficient filtration system. The filter system circulates the water in your pool and removes debris and insoluble particles. If your filtration system is working properly, the chemicals you use will be more effective. To keep your filter clean, follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding backwashing and general maintenance.

Pool Filtration

Q:How long should I run my filter system?
A: 24 hours per day is ideal and will minimize your chemical costs! The minimum for a residential pool is 8 hours per day.

Q: How often should I backwash my sand filter?

A: Backwashing once per week is usually sufficient. However, attention should be paid to the filter's pressure gauge and backwashed per manufacturer's recommendations, if necessary.

Q: How often should I change the sand in my filter?

A: Most manufacturers recommend changing the sand after 3 seasons. Some pool owners find that changing the filter sand more often helps them maintain clearer, cleaner water.

WARNING! Some sand marked "pool sand" or "pool filter sand" is not actually the type of sand intended for use in pool filters. Sand sold by department stores or home centers is usually the type of sand used in sandblasting, which may cause poor filtration and other problems.
