Pool Closing Tips
Green water, stains, corrosion and scale are problems not restricted to the swimming season. But don’t worry, proper closing procedures are your pool’s protection during the long winter and assure you of a clean, clear pool at opening.
1
. Take a water sample to Barbi-Lin Pools. After analyzing the sample, Barbi-Lin will let you know if any chemicals are needed to balance your water.2
. Clean the pool by brushing the walls, skimming the water surface and vacuuming the pool bottom. Clean the tile line. Empty pump and skimmer baskets.3
. Clean or backwash the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sand filters may be cleaned with filter cleaner, if necessary.4
. Shock treat the pool water using the appropriate dosage of Super Shock-It. Also, add E-Z Clor Algaecide or E-Z Clor Algaecide Plus. Then add E-Z Clor Metal Magnet if you fill your pool with well-water or other "natural water source". You may choose the convenience of a pre-packaged Winterizing Kit, which contains an oxidizer, algaecide and winterizer. Shock the pool with 1# of Super Shock-It prior to adding the contents of the winterizing kit. Continue running the filter for several hours to disperse well.5
. Lower the water in the pool down to the level recommended by the manufacturer for winterizing (generally below the skimmer or return inlets).6
. Drain water from equipment such as pump, filter, heater, chlorinator and hoses. Water should be removed from pipes by using a shop-vac or other blower. Protect the pipes and equipment of in-ground pools with a non-toxic, swimming pool antifreeze, such as Champion brand, available at Barbi-Lin Pools. A Gizzmo skimmer plug should be used in in-ground pool skimmers. Above-Ground skimmers should be left unplugged so that overflowing water may drain. Return inlets should be plugged with a threaded or expansion plug. Ladders, chlorinator (if off-line model) and pump/skimmer baskets should be stored.7
. Cover the pool using a good quality winter cover to prevent leaves, dirt and debris from accumulating in the pool. Leaves and other debris should be removed from the winter cover as it accumulates. This will prevent such debris from falling into pool when removing the cover in the spring. These winterizing tips are provided for your convenience. However, if you do not fully understand, or you are unsure of how to properly winterize your pool, you should consult a professional.
